Turnberry Golf Club
The Scottish Pebble Beach

Turnberry Golf Club has to be the most beautiful and breath taking scene for any golf club in the world. You could call it the Scottish Pebble Beach.

The famous Ailsa course has now hosted The Open four times (1977, 1986, 1994 and 2009). The Open Championship at Turnberry in 1977 became known as the dual in the sun between two golfing greats, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson with Tom Watson claiming The Claret Jug.

32 years later, back at the Turnberry Golf Club Tom Watson almost turned the clock back by leading The Open from day one, through most of the competiton, only to miss an 8 foot put on the eighteenth for the outright win and force a play off with fellow American Stewert Cink.

Unfortunately Tom Watson could not beat father time and was comprehensively beaten over four play off holes. Not taking any think away from Stewart Cink, the 2009 Open Championship at Turnberry will always be remembered as Watson's Open.

Ninth Fairway Turnberry

Turnberry Golf Club is situated on the rugged coastline of South Ayrshire. The famous Ailsa course runs along this beautiful rugged coastline with magnificent views out to sea where 11 miles out stand the courses namesake Ailsa Craig.

Turnberry 9th holeThe ninth hole (Bruce's Castle) is Turnberry's signature hole and my personal favourite,  the landmark lighthouse looking out to sea, and a narrow path out to the tee from where players drive out across the rugged coast line and on to a narrow fairway. The ninth hole at Turnberry has to be a golf hole to be played before you die!

Turnberry is the ultimate links course, you almost feel as though you are playing of the beach! With huge deep bunkers which are like  Venus Fly Traps! The wind blows in every direction making club choice extremely difficult, with every hole a tough test like the par 3 fourth as it's name suggest 'Woe-Be-Tide'.

All in all The Ailsa course at Turnberry Golf Club, is in my opinion the most majestic golfing heaven on earth, the Scottish Pebble Beach.
