TPC Sawgrass
The Stadium Course
Home To The Players Championship

The TPC Sawgrass has two courses, The Stadium Course and Valley Course. For our top 100 golf courses review I'm sure you'll agree if we stick to The Stadium Course.

The Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass is home to The Players Championship and is widely regarded as one of the toughest golf course in the world, just try playing it on the play station!!

The course has been redesigned to make it 'easier' for the pros! When the first Players Championship was played in 1982, the course was so difficult that the pros complained, when interviewed after, Jack Nicklaus commented that he "was no good at stopping a 5 iron on the hood of a car". Other pros where less complimentary.

The Stadium Course takes its name after the Pete and Alice Dye designed course which gives the fans like in other sports a stadium view. Fan at the TPC Sawgrass sit in 'stands' made of raised mounds of grass.

This Florida masterpiece is thwart with danger, narrow fairways lined with hazards and pot bunkers like Venus Fly traps waiting for any wayward shot. strategically placed palm trees to obscure a wayward approach shot, and lightning fast green.

Talking of greens, The Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass signature hole is the par-3 17th known quite simply as 'The Island Green'. As I mentioned earlier, I have had hours of fun with the kids on the play station with this one, (which is the closest I've got to actually playing the hole).

 'The Island Green' 17th

It's only a pitching wedge from tee to green, measuring 132 yards, but requires a precise shot. This is target golf, the green is completely surrounded by water, and there is nowhere to land the ball except on the green!

The 17th at TPC Sawgrass is the most celebrated hole on the tour, with thousands of golf fans sitting high up around the green, just waiting to see who put their ball in the drink! Huge roars go out when any pro just lands it on the green!

It is estimated that around 100,000 balls are retrieved from the surrounding water every year, balls not just lost by the pros, but by playing tourist also.

The Stadium Course at is rated 45th best course in the United States, and is officially in the top 100 golf courses in the world.

We had to feature it in our own top 100, I just hope one day I can out the play station down and play it for real!
