Sand WedgesSand Wedges do exactly what it says on the tin, gets you out of the sand! They are extremely useful, and can also be used on the fairway with a distance of around 80 to 90 yards, depending on your ability. They have a loft of between 54 to 58 degrees, although loft can be increased by "opening" the club face, which would result in a higher "flop" shot over a shorter distance, allowing the ball to stop quickly on the green. Getting out of a bunker is arguably the easiest shot in golf, although no doubt we've all seen many golfers stressed out in a bunker after three or four attempts, and been there! Because there is more bounce on a sand wedge, compared to other golf wedges, this allows you to blast the ball out of the bunker. In addition the bounce is set at an angle, unlike other golf wedges where the bounce is set parallel to the ground. The angle of the bounce prevents the club from "digging" in, instead skimming over the surface, with the leading edge getting under the ball. Great for bunkers shots, or playing out of rough or "soft" lies. Another reason for the bunker shot being the "easiest" is the bounce and leading edge allows you to hit a "fat" shot (hitting the ground before the ball) a poor shot on the fairway, but a great shot out of a bunker, in other words you can take a bad shot and have a great result! Really have a go at it, plenty of sand before the ball, blasting out of the bunker, effortlessly on to the green, for a sandy par! Conversely, using a this type of sand wedge on a firm surface, what is know as a tight lie is a difficult shot to master, with the extra bounce its easy to catch the ball thin with disastrous results! The sand wedge is the heaviest of all wedges (and irons) and commonly has the shortest shaft. It is a very versatile and much used club, as Gene Sarazen (winner of the 1932 British and U.S.Open) would bear out, he should know, he invented it! Sand wedges can do more than just get you out of a sand bunker, they are great from within 100 yards of the flag stick and when you learn how to master them well can give you lots of birdie opportunities!
