Provisional Ball by: Joe Krarup MD Passion-For-Golf.com
Hi Neil,
You have only one option here my friend. You have to play your original ball.
A provisional is just that, a provisional. If you find your original ball you must continue to play that ball.
As it's now unplayable you do have one option, that is to declare the ball unplayable and take a 1 stroke penalty drop.
By taking the 1 stroke penalty drop you are allowed to pick up the unplayable ball and drop it in a playable area no nearer the hole and keeping the tree (hazard) in line with the ball.
You can go back as far as you like away from the hole so as to give you enough room to clear the hazard (trees) on your next shot.
You can also drop the ball 2 club lengths back from the tree and elect to chip the ball back out onto the fairway (prefered option depending on how far into the woods you are)!
Either way you will be taking a 1 shot penalty so if your first shot was off the tee, you have now found your original ball, taken the 1 shot penalty relief, therefore you are now taking your 3rd shot.
Thanks for your question, hope you visit again soon.
Keep hitting the short stuff, Best wishes, Joe Krarup.
