Pitching Wedge
Pitch it Close to the Pin

Of the 4 types wedges, the pitching wedge is probably used most of all. The pitching wedge is the longest of the 4 wedges and has the least amount of loft, typically 45-49 degrees. The distance you would hit with this type of club is around 110 yards for men, and around 90 yards for women.

Anatomy of a Pitching Wedge

The main important characteristic of pitching wedges as with all wedges is the bounce angle. This feature enables the club head to "bounce" out of sand or rough without digging in. Bounce is the angle formed by the leading edge and the ground. A pitching wedge would be hit mostly from grass (as opposed to a bunker) and would therefore have minimal bounce (2-5 degrees). To much bounce on pitching wedges would be undesirable for this type of wedge as it would be more difficult to get the leading edge under the ball, causing you to "thin" the ball.

Pitching wedges are vary versatile clubs. If you are a big hitter of the tee, you may find yourself using your pitching wedge to pitch onto the green from around 110 yards. As well as using your wedge to pitch you can also use it to chip on from the edge of the green or punch your ball out of rough (in the woods) and back into play on the fairway. Pitching wedges are available with either a steel shaft or graphite shaft, the choice is yours. Lower handicappers and tour pros tend to use steel shafts, as they are able to generate more club head speed through the ball. Graphite shafts are recommended for higher handicappers as there is more whip in the shaft, which would encourage you to slow your swing down.
