Lob Wedge
Get it up High
The Lob Wedge is the most lofted of the four wedges
available, and is the most lofted club in your bag. The loft
on this
type of wedge ranges from 58 to 64 degrees, which enables you to get
tremendous
hight over a very short distance. I once heard one
commentator express that Tiger Woods was going to
"clip" he's left nostril with the golf ball, from around the green!
The lob wedge can be used anywhere on the golf course,
but is mainly used in cases where you would want great hight in order
to stop
the ball quickly on the ground. It can be used for getting out of a
bunker, although is of great use for getting over obstacles, perhaps a
staked tree between you and the green. The amount of bounce
usually dictates it's primary use, lob wedges with low bounce can be
used on firmer lies, where as those with more bounce can be used in
bunkers, and from the rough.
A
word of warning, executing this
shot is extremely difficult! The pros can literally "throw"
the ball in the air from the edge of the green Phil Mickelson
is a master at this type of shot. High handicappers attempt it at your
peril! It is easy to catch the ball thin
with the bounce on the underneath of the club, and thin the ball of
into the distance. Unless you have to go over an obstacle, stick to a
chip and run with a less lofted club, or even use the putter if your
around the green.
