How To Cure A Fat Shot and what Drills I Can Use at Home
by: Joe Krarup

Hi Arthur, in order to cure a fat shot, you need to strike the small ball before the big ball. In other words take a divot after you strike the ball not before, or as we say 'sweep' the ball of the fairway.

It sounds like you are collapsing 'into' the shot, perhaps you're trying to hit your long irons to hard.

The right leg must stay absolutely still from your takeaway, up to the top, and back down until you make contact with the ball. As you release and swing through, your right heel should begin to lift and turn towards the target.

You may also be a bit anxious on the shot, looking to see where it goes 'before' you make contact, trust your swing, keep your head down, until your right shoulder touches your chin, then follow through to the finish.

The drill I use at home is to practice with the David Leadbetter Swing Shot, I'm able to go through my full swing indoors. This also creates muscle memory.

The main thing is keep that right leg still, remain upright and try not to collapse into the shot.
