How to add distance with your irons by: Joe Krarup MD passion-for-golf.com
Hi Colin,
Thanks for your question. Getting more distance from your irons depends on where you are with your game at the moment. If your slicing the ball, or pushing out to the right, you will struggle to hit it long.
In order to hit it long you need to hit it straight, or better still with a draw.
The draw is the longest, most powerful shot in golf and you can achieve this with your irons as well as your driver.
The first tip I will give you for adding distance with your irons is to narrow your stance, this will enable you to hit further through the ball by turning your hips further through, a wide stance restricts you from turning through the ball on impact.
You want to create more club head speed through the ball on impact (without trying to hit to hard). Make sure you grip the club lightly in your fingers, you don't want the club in your palms, this will allow you to hinge more on your back swing which will create more club head speed.
In order to draw the ball (the most powerful shot in golf) you need to develop an in to out swing arc that will start the ball to the right of your target.
You need to align yourself aiming slightly to the right of the target. As you begin your back swing, your shoulders continue to turn, your arms must swing up and inside of the arc, maintaining your posture throughout the back swing.
As you begin the down swing the first thing you want to focus on is that the right arm begins to straiten out immediately, that's what creates club head speed. Keep your right shoulder back as long as possible, this will cause the club head to 'close' on impact which creates a draw. Your right arm crosses over your left arm as the golf club reaches the bottom of the arc.
Don't forget the follow through, after impact turn your left hip left out of the way and as you reach the top of your follow through your right arm will have completely crossed over your left arm.
Hit it straight and hit it long, visualise a right to left ball flight and you will soon be hitting your irons longer than ever!
