Hit down on the ball, or not? by: Joe Krarup MD passion-for-golf.com
Hi Steve,
Thanks for your question. I can't comment to much on Don Trahans 'system' as I'm not that familiar with it.
What I do know is that hitting 'down' on the ball particularly with the shorter irons and wedges is the best method of getting a high trajectory and creating back-spin.
Equipment plays a big part in this and we need to know how the loft of a club and particularly the grooves on the club effect the ball flight.
By hitting down on the ball the grooves impart back-spin on the ball which 'lifts' the ball in the air resulting in a higher ball flight, which allows you to 'drop' the ball on the pin.
For longer shots, mainly the driver (of the tee) and fairway woods you would have the ball much further in front of your stance (just inside your big toe) with your hands behind the ball. Your left ear (right handed golfers) should be positioned behind the ball so you have a reverse tilt.
Free up your head, as you begin your back-swing your head should move a fraction back so your well balanced and strong at the top of your back-swing. This will result in a shot where your still hitting down on the ball, but also 'sweeping' it of the tee or fairway and up into the air.
So Steve, it does really depend on the type of shot, short irons and wedges hit down, driver and fairway woods still hitting down, but sweeping it up.
For a great explanation on hitting down from the master of all shot making Lee Trevino please visit my golf video pages and view the first video, I lost count on how many times Lee says "hit down on the ball"
