Help With Rules

Rules : I hit a shot onto the green from 100 yds 2 ft to the pin .
Then my partner who is a simular distance takes his shot , hitting my ball 12 ft back . He the told me that its a two shot penalty to me for not marking my ball! But surely I was to far away to go then and mark the ball?
