For a newbee golfer just starting out I would recommend you go for graphite to begin with as graphite shafts have more whip therefore require a slower swing. This will help your tempo starting out. I would also recommend you go for more loft in your clubs, something like a set of John Letters would be good as they suit the higher handicapper.
