Golf Wedges
Master Your Short Game

Practice hard with your golf wedges, and see your score tumble. Improving your short game is probably the most important factor to lowering your scores. Professionals have know for years that adding more golf wedges to your bag and choosing the right models will make a dramatic differences to their scores.

A high majority of your shots are played with a wedge. Whether your pitching in from 100-120 yards, playing out of a bunker or chipping on from around the green, your wedge will be needed for 90% of these shots. Pitching & chipping are two shots you must master! Golf professionals spend hours chipping balls into buckets, and pitching balls into golf netting, or an upturned umbrella. Although these are shots to be practiced often, the golf wedge is the easiest club in the bag to use due to the short shaft and high degree of loft .

There are in fact 4 different types of wedges, the pitching wedge, the gap wedge, the lob wedge and the sand wedge. The 2 must haves are the pitching wedge and the sand wedge. A lob wedge is very useful if you have a hazard in your way (bunker) but a short distance to carry, say 20 yards. With a lob wedge you can literally throw the ball high in the air, and land it softly on the green. Phil Mickelson is excellent at playing this type of shot.

Lofted Wedge

Golf wedges have a high degree of loft, starting at 46 to 50 for a pitching wedge, between 51 and 54 for a gap wedge, 55 to 59 for a sand wedge and 60 to 64 degrees for a lob wedge. The underneath of the wedge has a wide sole, to encourage extra "bounce", particularly with the sand wedge, were the sole will bounce through the sand, lifting the ball up and out of a bunker. The amount of bounce needed depends on the lie of the ball. In deep grass, you would need more bounce, where as with a tight lie, you would not need so much. You can lesson the amount of bounce, and increase the amount of loft by "opening" the club face! Not easy to do, but with practice!

Most golf wedges will come complete with a set of irons, however you can purchase these separately. Like with your driver, you may choose to have a different make than your irons.
