Golf Irons
The scientific approach
Golf Irons
are all important. Collectively they are the most used clubs in your
bag and over time you may even find your favourite depending on
distance. Mine
is my 5 iron, I call it my "zinger,"
I Just know from around 180 yards what to pull out of the bag, the
"zinger"
wins every time.
If you're a beginner, you could do no better than starting with ebay to get an idea of what's best for you, as you could buy cheap individual golf irons to start with.
All low handicap golfers will tell you, to shoot a lower
score you need to learn good course
management,
and this is where your irons come in to play. You must learn to be
patient and play to your percentages. The higher the handicap the more
shots you are allowed, so use those shots. Don't
risk trying to fade a long iron around a tree, and try to get the golf
ball on the green from 230 yards, when you can punch
a 7 iron 125-150 yards down the
fairway, pitch on with a wedge and
still make par or bogey at worst.
Golf irons are manufactured 2 different ways. Forged
irons or "blades" as they are commonly
known, or Cast Irons or "Cavity Backed".
Forged irons are extremely
difficult to use and are recommended for low
handicappers and the pros. They have a dual cavity design, the upper
and lower cavities push weight to the perimeter, providing traditional
solid feel, and shot control for the skilled player. These are designed
for golfers who can create shots, want more back
spin, and are looking for more feel and control.
Cast irons, are more commonly used, they are easily
distinguishable by the "cavity" on the opposite
side of the club face. They offer higher flight control with more
"forgiveness"
for the skilled and aspiring player. The deep cavity creates a low and
deep center of gravity making it easier to launch
the ball high, and the larger sweet spot increases
control and accuracy.
Shaft is also a contributing factor in golf club design.
Steel or graphite? Graphite shafts
have more
"whip" and require a slower swing, which is good for beginners as it
helps to slow their swing, (more about this on my free golf lessons pages) resulting in a good tempo. Great Nick Faldo
tip! think "tempo"
when playing golf, particularly if you've not played for a week or so.
Steel shafts are used by the more experienced golfers who can create
enormous club head speed through the ball. In short they just "grip
it and rip it"
Try before you buy. Most golf outlets will let you try
out a demo club before you purchase, or some have a
driving range so you can get a good feel for your golf
irons, this is sound advise. Custom fitting is also
available, you can even get your own existing clubs custom
fitted at your local store or pro shop.
