Golf Drivers
Grip it and Rip it!

Golf Drivers are where the fun starts, and the frustrations begin!

Lets face it, we all love getting the big gun out of the bag and ripping it 350 yards down the fairway, landing the ball in position A, right in the middle of the fairway. It can also be a scary moment, particularly when there's an audience!

The game of golf, is 80% mental and 20% technique, for more on that head over to my golf instruction pages, which is why choosing the correct driver is so important. If your a beginner my advice would be to start with ebay
and start with a cheap driver before splashing out on a lot of cash, only to be frustrated, as you will be in the beginning.

Not drivers are the same, some are more forgiving than others. The ones with more degree of loft will help get the ball of the tee and up in the air more easily. The loft varies from 7 to 12 degrees, the higher the loft, the more easier the ball will be propelled into the air. The lower the loft, the more distance will be achieved of the tee. I would suggest the higher handicapper go with a more loft (10.5 to 12 degrees). Likewise the lower handicap golfer would go for 7 to 10 degrees. The difference in distance can be up to 30 yards for the lower loft.

Most drivers are now manufactured with over sized heads, although there are strict rules laid down by The Royal & Ancient golf club at St Andrews, governing the size. Just recently all R5 drivers where pronounced "illegal" because of the trampoline titanium face, which helps to get more distance of the tee.

Golf Drivers are also available in either steel shafts or graphite shafts.

In my opinion drivers with graphite shafts are best, particularly with high handicappers and beginners, as with a graphite shaft a slow swing is needed. Low and slow is the swing thought when getting the Big Gun out. Graphite shafts have more whip in them so you need a nice slow tempo swing (as with all shots) but particularly with the driver.
