Gap Wedges
Feel that Gap
Gap wedges, have been designed to fill the gap
between
the pitching wedge and the sand wedge. More and more wedges have been
introduced to the game with improved designs and also to advertise
increased ranges. Callaway offer 8 wedges in their
X Forged
range, with lofts from 48 to 64 degrees, with 12 loft/bounce
combinations. They also do 6 in their X Tour range with 8 loft/bounce
combinations.
Gap wedges typically have a loft of between 48 to 52
degrees, and
have little or no angle between the sole and the ground, or no bounce.
This club ads an extra dimension to your game, and can be very useful.
This
type of club is played primarily from the fairway and favours firm
lies. Typical distance hit with this type of wedge is around 80 yards,
depending on your ability. The pros can just "clip"
the ball over 100 yards (that's why there pros).
There is some confusion in labellings, some manufacturers
just label
a wedge by it's angle, (52 degree) or label them with an "A" for
approach wedge. Clubs with more loft are often called "dual
wedges" Ping golf clubs label theirs with a "U" for "utility
wedge". King cobra are one of the few manufacturers who label
their gap wedge with a "G".
