Tending the flag off the green
by: Joe Krarup MD passion-for-golf.com

Hi Ace (great name by the way)

You can have the flag tended if your off the green.

The Rules of Golf 2004-2007 as approved by R&A Rules Limited and The United States of Golf Association, rule 17.1 of this book states "Before making a stroke from anywhere on the course, the player may have the flag stick attended, removed or held to indicate the position of the hole".

This rule is never applied even on the pro tour which is probably why it's such a grey area,

Rule of thumb is that if you are off the green either leave it in or have it removed so there is no grey area.

Thanks for your question,
Keep hitting the short stuff,
Joe Krarup.
