The Belfry
Ryder Cup Magic

As with the West Course at Wentworth I have also had the privilege to play at The Belfry on The Brabazon Course, famous for 4 Ryder Cup matches in which Europe won 3 out of 4 (drawing in 1989 to retain the cup) the only golf course in the world to host the Ryder Cup on four separate occasions.

The Belfry does boast 2 other championship courses, the PGA National Course and the Derby Course, but it is The Brabazon Course that has the Ryder Cup Magic. Scenes of some of the most fascinating Ryder Cup battles including the majestic Spanish pairing of Seve Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazabal.

I have to say from an 18 handicap golfer I did find the Brabazon course fairly easy although I was playing of the yellow tees reducing it to a 6393 yard par 72. The championship tees are a long way back from where I was playing extending the course to a 7118 yard par 72!

The Peter Alliss Dave Thomas designed Brabazon Course is laid out in the style of Augusta National.  There are a number of great holes on the Brabazon most notably the 'short' par 4 tenth where Jose Maria Olazabal drove the narrow green whilst partnering Seve Ballesteros in the 1989 Ryder Cup in which Europe retained the trophy. For your information, I laid up, then played a short wedge over the creek.

The eighteenth green is one of the worlds greatest greens, a large three tier green sloping back towards the water, and protected at the back  by large bunkers. Sam Torranced secured victory for Europe on this green during the 1985 Ryder Cup.

The Brabazon Course is easy to get on to play, unlike some other prestigious golf courses, and reasonably priced at around £80.00. The Belfry is most definitely the place to go for all of you with a passion for golf.
